First Apple computer to be auctioned

The Apple l, the first Apple computer made by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976, is seen on display at Sotheby's in New York City. The computer was an integral component to the personal computing revolution. When originally sold, the monitor, keyboard and cassette interface were sold separately. It is believed less than 50 of the original Apple l are still in existence, with only six known to be in working condition.

The Apple I computer was designed and hand-built by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and marketed by Steve Jobs at the birth of Jobs's career as the world's computer design guru. Sotheby's called the computer "an exceptionally rare, working example with original Apple cassette interface, operation manuals and a rare BASIC Users' Manual."

There's no screen, it was built in 1976, and the clunky design does not exactly recall today's iPads, but the first Apple computer is expected to fetch up to $180,000 in New York. Sotheby's in New York is auctioning the rare piece of computer history, which actually still works, on June 15.

The iPhone 4S looks just like the iPhone 4, but it boasts across-the-board improvements under the hood. It now features a dual-core processor (reported to be 2x faster), dual-core graphics (said to be 7x faster), an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p full HD video, and HSPDA technology (max. download speed up to 14.4Mbps). iPad Mini Coming This October

Apple will be releasing a 7-inch iPad, known as iPad Mini, this October. According to a report from Business Insider, Barclays analysts think a new 7-inch iPad is on the way this year. “Following up on comments made last week, recent research still leads us to believe that Apple may be planning to add another form factor to its iPad line in the 7″ range for the fall,” Barclays analysts latest note reportedly said.

Meanwhile, iMore said that the iPad Mini, will be identical to the current 9.7-inch iPad, just scaled down. iMore noted that the resolution will still be at 2048×1536 but it will put the pixel density at about 326 ppi. The new iPad Mini will be priced at the range of $200 to $250. The cost is cheaper compared to the existing iPad by providing less storage capacity of only 8GB, reports said. These reports are all rumors and Apple has not yet confirmed any of these.

Apple drops '4G' from iPad adverts

Apple has stopped using the phrase 4G in adverts for its latest iPad. The description proved controversial because 4G is not widely available in the UK and the iPad will not work with it when it is. The UK's advertising watchdog and others around the world investigated Apple over use of the 4G phrase.

Apple said the confusion arose because of the ways operators refer to different high-speed mobile technologies. When the newest version of the iPad was launched in March, adverts for the device claimed it would work with 4G, meaning fourth generation, mobile technology. The 4G in question was a technology known as Long Term Evolution (LTE) that was starting to appear in the US.

However, when LTE arrives in Britain, the rest of Europe and many other nations, it will use different frequencies to those in the US meaning the iPad will not be able to use 4G everywhere. The disparity led to many complaints. In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) investigated and won assurances from Apple that its advertising would change.

A spokesman for the ASA said it had started a second investigation after consumers informrd that the 4G phrase was still being used to describe the iPad's capabilities. The ASA had been "working closely" with Apple to amend the way the iPad is advertised, said the spokesman, adding that the consumer electronics firm had been very co-operative during the investigation.

"We will be checking the amendments to ensure they adhere to the Advertising Code," he said. Apple said the confusion had arisen because of the different high-speed mobile technologies dubbed 4G by operators and carriers. Apple would change its terminology to remove this confusion.

"Carriers do not all refer to their high speed networks with the same terminology," said the firm in a statement, "therefore we've decided to use 'wi-fi + cellular' as a simple term which describes all the high speed networks supported by the new iPad. The advanced wireless features of the new iPad have not changed," it added.

Apple 'plans 7-inch iPad for October'

Apple plans to launch a 7-inch version of the iPad in October, according to rumours. Apple launched its third generation iPad earlier this year.

Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks during an event in San Francisco

The 7-inch iPad will have the same screen resolution as the new iPad and would sell for $200-$250, the Apple. iMore has a good record of publishing Apple rumours that turn out to be accurate.

Rene Ritchie, of iMore, wrote: "Our sources have indicated, that the 7-inch iPad will be identical to the current 9.7-inch iPad, just scaled down. That seems to include a 2048x1536 resolution display, just like the new iPad. If accurate, that would put the pixel density at around 326 ppi, the same as the iPhone 4S (and higher than the 264 ppi new iPad) retina display."

The iMore report is in line with other reports emerging from Asia, which suggest that an 'iPad Mini' will go on sale in the third quarter of this year. In April, it was rumored that Apple had been testing an iPad with a 7.85-inch screen.

Whether all of these rumours amount to anything remains to be seen. Those who believe that Apple will release a 'mini' iPad say that it would enable the company to cover the market for tablets, leaving little entry room for the competition. Apple took the same approach with digital music players, expanding its iPod range to include a variety of sizes and form factors.

Apple makes big gains in tablet market, Android stumbles

IDC have predicted that there would be a steep drop off in tablet shipments during Q1 of 2012. Following the surge of sales during the holiday season, a fall of 34 percent, while certainly staggering, is hardly surprising. But there's bad news: shipments failed to meet even those bleak predictions. Shipments fell by 38.4 percent, thanks in large part to Android slates stumbling dramatically. IDC expected Android would continue to make inroads in the market. Instead, the number of units moved dropped drastically, allowing Apple to maintain its position at the top.

After accounting for 54.7 percent of all tablet shipments in Q4 of 2011, the iPad opened up an impressive lead, claiming 68 percent of the market in Q1 of 2012. After catapulting to the number two spot by shipping 4.8 million units at the end of last year, Amazon fell to number three -- accounting for only 4 percent of tablets shipped, a precipitous fall from 16.8 percent last quarter. That's good news for Samsung, which reclaimed its place as first runner up.
