A giant paper airplane was successfully launched on Wednesday afternoon, March 21, 2012 in Arizona desert. It could be the world’s largest paper plane ever constructed which was said to be 45-foot long with a 24-foot wingspan and weighed in at a whopping 800 pounds.
Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona initiated the project which was said to be part of the museum’s Giant Paper Airplane Project that encouraged children to build a far-flying paper airplane. The museum launched a contest in January participated by children from 6 to 14 years old who could fold a paper plane and make it fly the furthest.
The giant paper airplane flew at 98 mph (158 kph) at an altitude of 2,703 feet (824 meters) after being towed into the sky by a Sikorsky S58T helicopter.
Engineers at the museum were inspired behind the design of a 12-year-old Arturo Valderamo who won the contest and decided to see whether they could fly their own (slightly larger) aircraft made from Falcon board paper.
