A rare sei whale was found in a grassy field some 800 yards away from the coast in England near Gerinish on South Uist. It was quite a shock to find the 56-foot long mammal so far away from the water's edge.
The beached whale was discovered just days ago, and rescuers attempted to float it back into the water, but they were not able to get the two ton mammal back into the ocean. Ali Jack of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue said, "The animal has now died. Because of its size there was nothing that could be done. We just tried to keep it comfortable." Hopefully they were able to help comfort this dying creature.
The theory on how the whale ended up in such an unusual location is that he was carried by an unusually high equinox tide, which deposited him on the sand bar. It is possible that the animal was sick as well, which caused it to go into unusually shallow waters. Unfortunately, the endangered whale was unable to get back to the ocean, and ended up dying.
What a terrible end for the majestic creature. It must have been terrible to be so far away from the water with no way of getting back. The ordeal was emotionally hard on the rescuers because there was nothing to do to save this rare sei whale's life, which was incredibly difficult to take. What a sad ending to this story.
