Using 3D printers to make consumer goods—like shoes, housewares, and gadgets—is slowly transitioning from science-fiction to reality. Now, Behrokh Khoshnevis of the University of California, is planning to take it further—by using printers to manufacturing building components. It’s an idea, he says, that is long overdue.

And, the innovative approach to building design and construction has far-reaching implications: Khoshnevis believes the technology could be used to build shelters on the Moon.
