Rare calico lobster found at Massachusetts restaurant, saved from being served as dinner

 

A rare calico lobster was found at a Massachusetts restaurant early this week, as shown in the photo below, which was saved from being served as dinner to customers and is now displayed at the New England Aquarium.

According to news, the rare lobster, which is dark with bright orange and yellow spots, was found at the Summer Shack restaurant in Cambridge by one of its employees. The rare calico lobster was found inside the 1,200-gallon lobster tank of the said restaurant owned by Chef Jasper White, who named the rare animal as Calvin and sent a picture of it to the New England Aquarium.

“We happened to be cleaning the tank and I happened to be there. One of my guys said, ‘Chef, look at this lobster,’ and from across the room I knew it was special.” Mr. White was quoted, noting that the strange lobster was caught in Winter Harbor, Maine.

“Calicos are considered a rare color. They used to say 1 in 30 million.” New England Aquarium spokesman Tony LaCasse was quoted as saying, adding that an unusual number of calico lobsters were found in summer of 2009 and scientists are now re-evaluating them.

Meanwhile, the recently found rare lobster will be sent later to the Biomes Marine Biology Center in Rhode Island, with Lobster Institute noting on their official website that colored calico lobsters are only 1-in-30 million.
