Mother-of-two survives for three days in crashed car by drinking soda and rainwater - and then smashes her way out of wreckage despite broken bones. A mother-of-two is recovering after being trapped in her wrecked van for almost three days and surviving on cans of soda and rainwater. Veronica McFoy lost control of her vehicle on a rural road in West Virginia.
The 41-year-old’s car went careering over a 30-foot embankment and landed in an overgrown area not visible from the road, according to authorities in Monongalia County.

She broke vertebrae, ribs and her chest bone and remained trapped in the car for three days. ‘I’d catch a few drops at a time,’ McFoy said. ‘I got so thirsty that that became like a big focus for me.’ The Monongalia County woman told how she was worried she would not make it out alive.
‘I wondered how I was going to get out. I was really, really hurt. My back hurt so bad I couldn’t figure out what to do,’ McFoy said.

Invisible: The 41-year-old's car went careering over a 30-foot embankment and landed in an overgrown area not visible from the road. ‘To not know whether you’re going to make it or not, it’s hard. I didn’t know how much strength I’d have.’ But after three days, McFoy mustered up the strength to use a pipe wrench she found in the van to smash a window.
She crawled out of the mangled vehicle and on to the main rain road to flag down help, screaming and shouting in pain. ‘Finally, after about 10 times, [the window] finally broke, and I felt such a big relief come over me,’ McFoy said
‘I never thought of myself as being a very strong person - but apparently I’m a lot stronger than I thought I was.’ Wilford McFoy, her husband of 22 years, said his wife’s survival is nothing short of a miracle. When he first saw her he thought she was dead.
'She’s laying there on a stretcher, her neck in a brace, IV’s and all that stuff in there,' Wilford said. McFoy is in a fair condition and could be leaving Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. Wilford McFoy, her husband of 22 years, said his wife's survival is nothing short of a miracle.
