Aspiring pro-skier Josh Dueck broke his back in 2004 when a ski flip went wrong, an experience that left him in a wheelchair. But he knew he wanted to return to the slopes. The Sit Ski, or a mono-ski designed for paraplegics, made that possible. Not only that, but with the Sit Ski, Dueck was able to perform the first-ever seated ski backflip. “This is something I’ve been dreaming of ever since I was laid out in the hospital,” Josh said.
While working on a documentary “Freedom Chair,” Dueck told his friend Mike Douglas, director of Switchback Entertainment, which specializes in online action sports video, that he “wanted to go upside down on snow again,” Douglas recalled. They went to Whistler, British Columbia to make it happen.
Dueck said he realized a seated backflip was possible when he was practicing indoors and jumping into a foam pit. To prepare for this, he eventually started trying the stunt outside, landing on an air-filled crash mat on the slopes. On Feb. 3, he decided it was time for the real deal — and he lands it. Dueck’s inspiring journey is told in the video below:-
