Some Amazing Facts about Physics


Love physics or hate it? Whatever the case maybe, the following facts will generate some interest of physics in you..! And to the physics lover, you might find something interesting to scratch your heads and mind on! The facts have been neatly divided into different categories along with the pictures. 



Classical Physics

 If given the same mass, our body would actually be hotter than the sun ie hotter than thousands of millions of degree Celsius'!!!

When glass breaks, the cracks move at speeds of more than 4,500 km/hr (3,000 miles/hr).

When traveling at 80 kilometres per hour (50 miles per hour), cars use around half of their fuel just to overcome wind resistance.


Water & earth

The Dead Sea is so dense with salt, you can easily float on it without drowning.

Lake Baikal in Russia contains more water than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

The world's densest wood, the Black Ironwood (Olea laurifolia), does not float on water and therefore sinks.

The Atlantic Ocean grows at about the same rate as your fingernails.

The average ice berg weighs 20,000,000 tons.

The amount of water beneath our ground soil is 50 times as much as all the water in the rivers and lakes combined.

The only rock that floats in water is pumice.


Light

Light travels very, very fast. The speed of light in a vacuum (an area empty of matter) is around 186,000 miles per second! (300,000 kilometres per second!).

In physics, light refers to electromagnetic radiation. The light we normally talk about in everyday life refers to the visible spectrum (the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that the human eye can see).

Other animals can see parts of the spectrum that humans can’t. For example, a large number of insects can see ultraviolet (UV) light.

UV light can be used to show things the human eye can’t see, coming in handy for forensic scientists.

The wavelength of infrared light is too long to be visible to the human eye.

Sunlight exerts pressure (solar radiation pressure).

On a clear day, a beam of sunlight can be reflected off a mirror and seen up to 40km away.

The most powerful lasers are made with Neodymium-doped Yttrium crystals. In a fraction of a second, they produce more power than the whole United States.

Light does not age!

Light from the Earth takes just 1.255 seconds to reach the Moon.


Sound

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced just enough sound energy to heat up one cup of coffee.

Dogs can hear sound at a higher frequency than humans, allowing them to hear noises that we can’t.

When traveling through water, sound moves around four times faster than when it travels through air.

Gravity

Due to gravitational effects, you weigh slightly less when the moon is directly overhead.

Tides are caused by the rotation of the Earth and the gravitational effects of the Moon and Sun.

A person standing on a diving board above a swimming pool has gravitational potential energy.

The higher something is, the greater its gravitational potential energy. Back in the Middle Ages, weapons called trebuchets were used to take advantage of this principle, using mechanical advantage and the gravitational potential energy of a counterweight to hurl rocks and other projectiles at or over walls. In modern times we use the gravitational potential of water to create hydroelectricity.


Electricity & Magnetism

The lightning bolt is 3 times hotter than the sun.

Lightning strikes about 6,000 times per minute on our planet.

Lightning is a discharge of electricity in the atmosphere. 

Lightning bolts can travel at around 210,000 kph (130,000 mph), while reaching nearly 30,000 °C (54,000 °F) in temperature.

Electricity plays a role in the way your heart beats. Muscle cells in the heart are contracted by electricity going through the heart. Electrocardiogram (ECG) machines used in hospitals measure the electricity going through someone’s heart, when the person is healthy it usually shows a line moving across a screen with regular spikes as the heart beats.


Nuclear Physics & Quantum Mechanics

Atom is over 99.9% empty space.

If an atom were the size of a stadium, its electrons would be as small as bees.

The diameter of a proton is approximately 0.000000000001 mm (1/25,000,000,000,000 inch).


Theory of Relativity

The effect of Relativity made Astronaut Sergei Avdeyev a fraction of a second younger upon his return to Earth after 747 days in space.

If an item moves very, very fast, it becomes smaller and heavier!
