Google Reveals 2012 New Year’s Doodle

Fans of Google Doodles — the charming illustrations and re-imaginations of “Google” that appear on the site’s main page — can get an early look at the company’s New Year’s doodle with a little smart thinking and a foreign domain URL.

Google has posted its 2012 New Year’s doodle on international landing pages where, due to time zone differences, it’s already New Year’s Eve. The doodle, shown above, can be found on sites such as google.co.kr (South Korea) or google.co.nz (New Zealand). Google is known to create a variety of doodles on its multiple homepages for major events, but it looks like this one could be a global doodle.

The doodles, originally created in 1998 as a sort of “out of office” notice when Google’s founders left for Burning Man, have become an online phenomenon in their own right. They have been made to celebrate international holidays, historical landmarks, famous birthdays and just about anything else you can imagine. The doodles have also become something of an art form, with noted artists and designers submitting doodles on special occasions.

1999

Google's first ever holiday Doodle was a simple snowman.

2000

A year later Google celebrated the festive season with ice-skating penguins.

2001

In 2001 Google debuted its first multi-part holiday Doodle: polar bears decorating the logo with lights

Google kicked off 2002's festivities on Dec. 23 with a pile of presents...

Before adding some furry creatures in the next four 2002 Doodle installments

2003

The year 2003 saw another snowman theme. The characters dug the logo out of a snow drift, before replacing one of the logo's "Os" with a giant snowball

2004

The following year was a riot of activity: A sequence of five Doodles depicted a variety of animals having some festive fun.

2005

The first four Doodles in 2005 featured a cat and mouse calling a truce to put up some Christmas lights

2005 Finale

The final Doodle that year, which appeared on Dec. 24, displayed the fruit of their labors all lit up.

Dec 21 2006

Google started early in 2006. The company decorated the holiday logo on Dec. 21.

2006

The next four Doodles showed kangaroos knitting a Christmas sweater gift.

2007

Stickmen decorated the logo in 2007's five-part sequence.

2008

Illustrations in 2008 showed a toymaker hard at work in his studio.

2009

Google sent the world a series of postcards in 2009, ending with a spaceship and a peace sign.

2010

In 2010 Google displayed its first interactive Doodle for the holidays: 17 images (which took five artists over 250 hours to create) showed festive scenes from all around the world.

2011

By replacing the letters of its logo with Christmas-lit holiday icons, Google got a little abstract this 2011 holiday season. In the US version, the Doodle plays Jingle Bells and then automatically re-directs to a "Happy Holidays" Google search.

The Sesame Street

Everyone loves the Sesame Street gang, and the best part about this Doodle was that each character had their own individual logo as well! Ernie, Bert, Oscar, and our personal favorite The Count helped you search while bringing back some childhood memories.
